Madrid Police Report December 2-8

December 2, 2019

  • An officer was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident at Eighth Street and South Kennedy Avenue. Unit 1 was turning eastbound east on Eighth Street off of Iowa Highway 17/S. Kennedy Avenue. The driver had not properly scraped the ice from her windshield and had a limited field of view. Unit 1 took the corner too widely and crossed the center line, striking the front end of a Madrid School Bus that was stopped at the stop sign facing west. No injuries and minor damage were reported in the low-speed collision. An officer later met with the Madrid School Bus superintendent and gave him a copy of the accident report for the insurance company.
  • An officer met with a local insurance agent who requested information on a past accident report that the Madrid Police Department covered for the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. The officer forwarded the information to the agent.
  • An officer was called to the 400 block of N. Main Street for a raccoon in a house. The officer removed the animal and relocated it to the water plant.
  • An officer returned a call to a Madrid resident who had a question on a past case.
  • An officer followed up on a theft / unauthorized spending case involving a resident’s debit card being charged more than $1,600 to Victoria Secret’s online. The officer sent a request to the company for all the account information.
  • An officer responded to a motor vehicle accident at N. Kennedy Avenue and E. North Street. No injuries were reported. The accident was non-reportable. The officer did an exchange of information for the drivers.

December 3, 2019

  • An officer received a call of a dog running at large at Second and S. Main streets while children were walking to school. The officer spoke to a Madrid resident who picked the dog up and thought she knew where it belonged, but turned out to be the wrong house. The officer received a call from dispatch from the animal’s owner, and the animal was returned.
  • An officer followed up on a call of debris on the parking at Sixth Street and S. Kennedy Avenue. The officer spoke to the owner and informed him that whatever was not picked up by the garbage company this week must be removed.
  • An officer was dispatched to an incomplete 911 call in the 400 block of W. 22nd Street. The officer spoke to the female who lived at the residence and found her child was playing with the phone.
  • An officer was called to the 200 block of Grisby Court by a Madrid resident who said there was a possible bird in his residence. The officer found that his smoke alarms were chirping due to battery issues. The officer informed him to call his landlord to have them replaced.
  • An officer was dispatched to the 600 block of S. Kennedy Avenue for a resident who had a U-Haul stuck in her front yard. The officer assisted the female with help from a Madrid firefighter, and they were able to get the unit out and parked in a safe area for loading.
  • An officer spoke to a Madrid resident who was the victim of a theft / unauthorized spending on his debit card. The officer received the information from the company, identifying the suspect who committed the felony theft. The victim decided that he no longer wanted to be a victim and entered into a civil agreement with the suspect, who agreed to pay the money back. The criminal case was closed.
  • An officer spoke to staff of the Madrid Historical Society about a vehicle that they said showed up on their property two weeks ago. The officer contacted the owner, who lives in Boone, and told her the vehicle needed to be removed. She stated that she would get right on it and have it removed.
  • An officer assisted the Madrid Fire/Rescue on an emergency medical call.

December 4, 2019

  • An officer received a call about a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle downtown and possibly smoking marijuana. The officer made contact with the male and found him to be enjoying a cigar before he left for work.
  • An officer assisted a Madrid resident in the 100 block of W. Second Street with a vehicle unlock.
  • An officer made a call to a demolition company that was contracted to tear down a property in Madrid. The owner of the company confirmed that they would be in town the following day to complete the work. The officer passed on the information to city officials.
  • An officer received a complaint about a black Dodge Charger being driven by a high school aged student who was accelerating fast in the 500 block of E. Second Street. The caller also said that a silver Mazda truck with front-end damage was doing the same. The caller wanted the parents of the juveniles spoken to about the driving issues and also told not to trespass on others’ property while walking to friends’ houses.
  • An officer responded to an alley near Veteran’s Square for an open burn. The person burning was advised of the ordinance, and the fire was extinguished.
  • An officer responded to 800 block of E. Second Street for an open burn. The person burning was advised of the ordinance, and the fire was extinguished.
  • An officer responded to 500 block of E. Second Street for a driving complaint. The officer spoke to juvenile driver and his mother. The juvenile took full responsibility for driving behaviors. A verbal warning was issued for driving behavior.
  • An officer responded to the 200 block of S. Walnut Street for a 19-month-old female having difficulty breathing. An officer assisted EMS.

December 5, 2019

  • An officer was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident on N. Kennedy Avenue/Iowa Highway 17 at the Madrid High School entrance. Unit 1, driven by Randy Behle of Boone, was northbound and slowing for turning traffic. Unit 2 was driven by Alex Vanderbeek of Waukee, who was also traveling northbound. Vanderbeek stated that he fell asleep and rear-ended Unit 1. Unit 1 was driven away from the scene, and Condon’s Towing was contacted and towed Unit 2 because of extensive front-end damage. No injuries were reported.
  • An officer spoke to a Madrid resident about a civil case.
  • An officer followed up with workers demolishing a residence in town about some safety issues. The officer passed on the information to the public safety councilperson.
  • An officer fingerprinted a Madrid resident for a job-related background check.
  • An officer assisted a mother who was with speaking with her young daughter after the child was caught stealing candy from a friend.
  • An officer responded to Gerald Street for a male seen running through backyards. The male was found and determined to be a juvenile. An investigation determined that there was no criminal activity.
  • An officer responded to a trailer at the Meadow Estates Park to speak with a parent about an assault that took place at the Madrid High School earlier. The officer recommended that they first speak with school officials to resolve the issue.

December 6, 2019

  • An officer contacted a Madrid property owner who just demolished a property in town to get updated information on the final process.
  • An officer was called to an out-of-control, elderly female in the 400 block of N. Main Street. After speaking with all parties involved, the officer requested the Boone County Ambulance to transport the female to the hospital.
  • An officer returned a phone call to a Madrid resident who needed information about events going on in Madrid next weekend.
  • An officer received a call of a suspicious vehicle seen parking in front of different houses. The officer was able to identify the vehicle as belonging to a U.S. Postal Service employee, who was following around the delivery staff.

December 7, 2019

  • An officer attended the Madrid City Council meeting.
  • An officer received a bicycle found on the trail near the Madrid Police Department. The officer posted the found bike on social media in attempt to locate its owner.
  • An officer provided a vehicle unlock at the Madrid Market.
  • An officer answered a call for a request on the holiday activity schedule.
  • An officer took a theft report from the 700 block of E. Sixth Street. The investigation is ongoing.
  • An officer assisted with a civil issue involving a teenage couple who broke up.
  • An officer filed multiple warrants for a motor-vehicle theft case.

December 8, 2019

  • An officer received a complaint in the 500 block of E. First Street about a dog caught running at large. The officer picked up the animal and put him in the city shed. The officer was able to locate the animal’s owner and returned the dog to her.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
