MADRID — Woodward-Granger nearly erased a seven-point deficit with just over two minutes to play before falling to host Madrid, 45-44, in a WCAC contest played in a charged atmosphere between the rivals.

“We played through a fair amount of adversity and kept our wits about us,” W-G head coach Gary Dresback said. “I felt we fought pretty darn hard, we just didn’t get any breaks, of any kind, especially late in the game. I can’t complain about the kind of effort we gave.”

W-G (2-6, 0-5) trailed, 41-34, late in the game and faced a 45-40 hole with under one minute to play. A Hawk basket, a missed Tiger free throw and another Hawk hoop brought the score to within 45-44 with 3.2 seconds to play, but the guests could not finish off the rally.

Madrid (4-3, 3-3) held a 22-20 lead at the intermission after the teams were locked in a 9-all tie when the first quarter ended. The hosts slowly opened a lead in the third quarter and led, 36-31, as the final frame began.

Shayla Peters were 11-of-13 at the foul line in scoring 15 points for Madrid, which was 15-of-23 at the stripe. Sarah Eagleton also had 15 points, with Shelbi Raymond scoring nine points, Molly Schaffer four and Kyra Troendle two.

Alyssa Bice led W-G with 13 points, with Natalie Helbling scoring a career-best 11 points. Mae Anderson and Kaitlyn Peters had six points apiece, with both Kayley Dresback and Katelyn Scharlau adding four points. W-G was 10-of-14 at the four line in the game.

W-G hosts Class 2A No. 7 Panorama Tuesday in their final action before the holiday break.
