Maria de Lourdes Barragan de Sweet, lovingly known as Lourdes, 63, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family and friends June 14, 2025.
Born on Sept. 14, 1961, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, to Mercedes Vargas and Javier Barragán, Lourdes grew up in a home filled with love, laughter and the close bonds of her large family — six sisters and one brother. Her faith and love for family were the foundation of her life from the beginning.
Lourdes met Tony in Storm Lake, Iowa in 1994. The pair quickly fell in love and married despite speaking two different languages. The family moved to Perry, where they raised their daughters, Samantha, Sabrina and Sarah.
Lourdes dedicated 20 years to working at Tyson.
Lourdes was a member of St. Patrick’s parish, where she attended Mass, helped with fundraisers and volunteered as a religious education teacher for many years.
Lourdes’ energetic, generous, and warm spirit made her a friend to many. Her home was always filled with loved ones, laughter and her delicious Mexican cooking.
She loved shopping, getting her nails done and celebrating with others by attending their special events.
Her greatest joy in life came from her family and friends. Lourdes was known as Aubi or Abuelita by her grandchildren, whom she adored spending time with.
Lourdes is remembered for her resilience and living life passionately. She battled cancer on and off for 15+ years. Through her years of treatment and surgeries, Lourdes never wavered in her faith in God, positivity or love for her family and friends.
Lourdes’ legacy continues to live on through the memories and traditions inherited by the many who loved her.
Lourdes is survived by her husband, Tony Sweet, as well as her children, Sarah Sweet (Allen Allred), Sabrina Sweet (Austen Winders-Palumbo), Samantha Thompson (Matthew, Brody), Mitch Sweet (Madison, Knox, Adeline) and Amanda Olson (Paul, Thor, Alana, Olivia, TJ). She also leaves behind her many siblings, Oscar (Raquel), Rocío (Sergio), Martha (Ricardo), Arcelia (Hellmuth), Norma Mercedes (Salvador), Claudia (Juan) and tia María Esther (Rodol).
Lourdes is preceded in death by her mother, Mercedes Vargas; father, Javier Barragán; sister, Angélica Barragán (Isaías); and dog, Oso, who will be greeting her in heaven.
A vigil/ visitation (with urn present) will be held on Friday, June 20 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the St. Patrick Catholic Church at 1312 Third St., Perry, IA 50220, followed by a Rosary service at 7 p.m. On Saturday, June 21 a bilingual funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A light brunch will follow at the St. Patrick School Gymnasium at 1302 Fifth St., Perry, IA 50220. Please use the side door for entrance to the gymnasium. A private family burial and a Celebration of Life with friends and family are tentatively planned for November. Details will be shared once confirmed.
María de Lourdes Barragán de Sweet, cariñosamente conocida como Lourdes, falleció pacíficamente en su casa rodeada de familiares y amigos el 14 de junio de 2025.
Nació el 14 de Septiembre de 1961 en Guadalajara, Jalisco, México, hija de Mercedes Vargas y Javier Barragán. Lourdes creció en un hogar lleno de amor, risas y los lazos inquebrantables de su numerosa familia, formada por seis hermanas y un hermano. Siempre fue una mujer de fe, caritativa, agradecida, trabajadora, y una gran luchadora.
Lourdes conoció a Tony en Storm Lake, Iowa, en 1994. Fue un amor a primera vista. El idioma, las costumbres, y la cultura no fue inconveniente para que se enamoraran. Se casaron y formaron una bonita familia. La familia se estableció en Perry, Iowa, donde criaron a sus hijas Samantha, Sabrina y Sarah.
Lourdes dedicó 20 años de su vida laboral a Tyson Foods.
Fue miembro activo de la parroquia de San Patricio, donde asistía a misa, ayudaba en recaudaciones de fondos y fue maestra de catecismo por muchos años.
Con su espíritu enérgico, generoso y cálido, Lourdes se convirtió en amiga de muchas personas que la admiraban y la querían. Su hogar siempre estuvo lleno de seres queridos, risas, y su deliciosa comida mexicana.
Disfrutaba ir de compras, arreglarse las uñas, y disfrutaba a todas las celebraciones a las que fue invitada.
Su mayor alegría fue siempre su familia y amistades. Sus nietos, quienes la llamaban cariñosamente “Aubi” o “Abuelita”, fueron su motor para seguir adelante hasta el final de su vida.
Lourdes es un ejemplo de una gran mujer por su valentía, fortaleza, actitud, por vivir la vida con pasión. Luchó contra el cáncer que tuvo durante, parte de los últimos 15 años. A lo largo de tratamientos y cirugías. Jamás perdió su fe en Dios.
Su legado de vida vivirá para siempre en todos sus seres queridos que la amaron.
Le sobreviven su esposo Tony Sweet, sus hijos Sarah Sweet (Allen Allred), Sabrina Sweet (Austen Winders-Palumbo), Samantha Thompson (Matthew, Brody), Mitch Sweet (Madison, Knox, Adeline) y Amanda Olson (Paul, Thor, Alana, Olivia, TJ). También les dejó a sus hermanos Oscar (Raquel), Rocío (Sergio), Martha (Ricardo ♰), Arcelia (Hellmuth ♰), Norma Mercedes (Salvador), Claudia (Juan ♰), y su tía María Esther (Rodol ♰).
Lourdes fue recibida en el reino de los cielos por sus seres queridos que ya fallecieron sus padres Mercedes Vargas ♰, Javier Barragán ♰, Angélica Barragán ♰ (Isaías ♰) y su perrito Oso ♰.
Se llevará a cabo su celebración (con sus cenizas) el viernes 20 de junio a las 4:30 p.m. a 7:00 p.m. en la Iglesia Católica San Patricio, ubicada en 1312 3rd St., Perry, IA 50220. Los invitamos a rezar el Santo Rosario a las 7:00 p.m. El sábado 21 de junio se celebrará una misa bilingüe en honor a Lourdes por su eterno descanso a las 9:30 a.m. en la iglesia San Patricio. Después de la misa los esperamos a un desayuno ligero en el gimnasio de la escuela San Patricio, ubicado en 1302 5th St., Perry, IA 50220. Estamos organizando una celebración de vida con amigos y seres queridos en noviembre. A su tiempo se compartirán los detalles del evento.
