Mary Elizabeth Evans of Ames

Mary Beth Evans (nee Peel), 66, of Ames passed peacefully Monday, April 11 in Perry, Iowa, after a long illness. A memorial service is planned for May.

Mary Beth was raised in Glenview, Illinois, where she attended Our Lady of Perpetual Hope Catholic School and Glenbrook South High School.

She was a Cyclone fan, having earned her B.S., M.S. and D.V.M. from Iowa State University.

Mary Beth had a long and successful career at the U.S. Department of Agriculture APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratory and enjoyed volunteering at the Animal Rescue League.

Mary Beth’s lifelong passion was her animals. She partnered with many wonderful horses, including several horses she bred and raised herself, which she competed in hunter/jumper horse shows as well as foxhunting.

Mary Beth also loved her many dogs that she competed in agility trials. She had many successes, including qualifying for and competing at the 2011 Eukanuba National Finals.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ernie Peters; her dogs, June and Nike; horses, Dyna, Chevy and Marge; sisters, Mary Kathryn (Pahlman) McLeod and Mary Ann Peel; brothers, Robert Peel and Warren Peel; nieces and nephews, Tim McLeod, Christine (McLeod) Woldt, Mike McLeod, Jackie (Fouts) Weaver, Chris Fouts, Brian Peel and Michelle Peel.

Memorials may be sent to the ARL or the Alzheimer’s Association. Hastings Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of arrangements.
