May Catherine Axtell, 83, of Madrid passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, at the Madrid Home Communities in Madrid, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb.28 at 10 a.m. at the Bethel Church in Boone. Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 27 from 5-7 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care. Burial will be at the Grange Cemetery near Logan, Iowa, following the luncheon.

Memorials will be given to Awanas at Bethel Church or the Telephone Pioneers and may be left at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent at www.carrisfuneralhome.com.

May Catherine Axtell was born May 13, 1935, at Mondamin, Iowa, to John William and Mary (Brandenburg) Fox.

She graduated from Missouri Valley High School.

She was united in marriage to Earle Gene Axtell Dec. 11, 1953.

May worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co.in Missouri Valley  and then in Omaha, in Carroll and then back to Omaha, retiring in 1991.

May was a member of the Bethel Church, where she served as church secretary for 18  years after moving to Woodward.

She enjoyed Awanas, her Bible study group, playing cards and her grandchildren.

In death she rejoins her husband, Earle; parents, John and Mary; step-mother, Nellie Fox; and brothers, Kenneth, Harry and Lester Fox.

Left to cherish May’s memory are her daughter, Linda (Keith) Tingwald of Woodward; grandchildren, Kristen (John) Finical of Villisca, Iowa, Garrett (Dawn) Tingwald of Woodward and Courtney (Dan) May of Corydon, Iowa; great grandchildren, Ella and John Finical and Evelynn and Colton Tingwald; and sisters, Betty Vollers and Judy (Pete) Smalley; and  brother, Jerry Fox.
