Memorial Day services recall patriots’ sacrifices

The Avenue of Flags ripples in the breeze at the Rippey Cemetery on Memorial Day.

The Perry VFW Post 2060 hosted a Memorial Day Sunday for James E. Leber, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the father of VFW Department of Iowa Junior Vice Commander Ronald Leber of Perry.

Leber spoke at the service along with Perry VFW Post 2060 Commander Nathan Hoffman and Perry Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Brian Eiteman.

A flag-folding ceremony was held, and the folded flag was presented to Deb Goodrich.

In Rippey, the Kincaid Martin American Legion Post 583 hosted a morning ceremony at the Rippey Cemetery. The exercises a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, patriotic speeches, a laying of a memorial wreath, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”

A luncheon was served following the services in the Rippey United Methodist Church.
