Mid-season joys of church dinners multiply

Gun shows, pork loins make all-American fun

We just keep on going through the dinner season. I have found several other dinner dates that I need to get posted here in ThePerryNews.com.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, I first headed with some others to the gun show in Marshalltown. We stopped downtown, and I was amazed at how much damage there still was to many buildings hit by the large tornado earlier this year. Still a lot of clean up to do.

After I got home, another dinner came upon Dan and me as we headed to the local Trinity Lutheran Church in Perry. A dedicated congregation has provided many dinners over the past two years on a regular basis. This was a chicken and noodle dinner. Included was mashed potatoes, salad, green beans, a choice of desserts, beverage and ice cream.

Monies were raised for church projects and upcoming missions.

Then came our next dinner on Oct. 17, when the Guthrie Center United Methodist Church hosted their annual pork loin dinner. I always say that they serve this pork loin in heaven for Sunday dinner.

There is always a large crowd, and I had to wait in the sanctuary for my number to be called. Dan was planning to attend also, but he called me and said that he had to go out of town for an assignment.

At this dinner there is always a large assortment of salads, desserts, mashed potatoes, dressing, pork loin, gravy and dinner rolls. I ate to my fill.

I tried to find out how long this dinner had been going on, but no one knew. Maybe since 1860, when the church started. I always like to look at the very old stained glass windows. By each window is a description of the history of the window and the meaning of it.

The women of the church also hosted a bake sale. I bought a few items from there as well.

Again monies raised were for the church maintenance and missions.

By the next day, Dan was back from his assignment. After I came back home from Polk City, I picked him up at his house, and we headed to the Linden United Methodist Church. Each year they have a Hunter’s Steak Dinner. It is a minute steak like my mom makes and is very good.

Also mashed potatoes, thick gravy, green beans, corn, Harvard beets — you do not see these very often — dessert and beverage.

There was also was a country store where various baked items were sold. Dan and I both bought some items. It seems they put the most enthusiastic workers in the sales. Maybe they move more items. They love it when you ask questions.

As always, monies go to the church and various missions. Like all of the others also, a chance to visit.

Keep a look out for other dinners.
