Mildred Darlene Vodenik of Perry

Mildred Darlene Vodenik, youngest of 10 children, was born to Jay and Lucy (Stapes) Jones in Redfield, Iowa, Jan. 23, 1929. She died Feb. 9, 2016, at the Rowley Masonic Home in Perry at the age of 87.

A visitation service was held Friday, Feb. 12 at Hastings Funeral home in Perry. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Perry. Pastor Chris Tjapkes officiated the words of comfort.

Honorary Bearers were Norman Borst, Merle Jones, Luther Hartman, Bernita Patience, Shirley Manders, Phyllis Cozad, Dorothy Burgett and Ruby Blake.

Casket Bearers were Troy Jones, Randy Vodenik, Larry Vodenik, Kenneth Martin, Eric Krohn and Dave Summerson.

Music was provided by organist Sue Tjapkes and soloist Jenny Denk. Hymns selected by the family were “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “Good Night and Good Morning.” Congregational hymns were “Face to Face” and “Amazing Grace.”

Mildred was laid to rest at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.

Mildred or “Midge,” as she preferred, grew up around Redfield and graduated from Redfield High School in 1947. In 1948 Midge graduated from the American Academy of Beauty.

Midge was united in marriage to Robert Vodenik Nov. 1, 1950. in Redfield. Florence Kester officiated their wedding. They were blessed with two children, Michael and Wanda.

The family made their home in Perry after they were married.

They were faithful members of First Baptist Church.

Midge owned and operated Magic Mirror Beauty Salon in Perry for more than 20 years.

In her free time, Midge enjoyed learning how to play the Lowrey organ, and Robert joined her in that endeavor. She made beautiful porcelain dolls and did beautiful embroidery work and was a good artist. Midge loved music, especially the banjo, and you could always find her having a good time at the local barn dances.

She farmed with Bob on their acreage and homeschooled her grandchildren. Midge taught Sunday school at their church for many years.

Midge was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son, Michael Vodenik; grandson, Alex Vodenik; brothers, Orville, Marlin, Auttie and Virgil; sisters, Loretta Hartman, Bethel Sayles, Dorothy Borst, Goldie Cummins and Vera Kindred.

Midge is survived by her daughter, Wanda (Billy) Willis of Perry; son-in-law, Terry (Susan) Schnirring of Cumming; grandchildren, Paul Schnirring of Altoona, Eric Schnirring of Ankeny, Teresa (Sam) Chopard of St. Charles, Bradley Schnirring of Perry, Timothy (Allison) Schnirring of Bellevue, Wash., Andrew Vodenik of Perry, Aaron (Arika) Vodenik of Perry, Anna (Mark) Eppert of Perry and Anjel Vodenik of Perry; several great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and many friends.
