Two months into her new job as director of the Minburn Public Library, Nicole Connick has restarted the Friday open gym program at the former Central Dallas High School in Minburn.

“We’re here Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon,” Connick said as she stood among the playing children. She said the open gym days stopped for a while, but she has resumed them as one of her first duties.

This week saw 28 children and 10 adults in the facility, a larger crowd than usual because the ADM schools are out today, she said.

“It’s another world in  here,” said Jon West Sr. as he stepped from the hallway into the gymnasium. West does doorman duties during the play time in a spirit of grandfatherly benevolence.

Bethany West, Jon’s daughter-in-law, said opening the gym “is a great resource for folks around here and makes good use of the school.”  The largely vacant building is part of the Adel-De Soto-Minburn School District but is not currently used for classes.

Connick said she arranges for Friday use of the gym by filling out a facilities request with the ADM school district.
