“Way cool.”

That is how Larry Vodenik, Perry Hy-Vee events manager, described a discovery he made Wednesday morning in rural Perry.

“I made a delivery out behind New Opportunities,” Vodenik said, “and on that road to the north of them is a house with a giant Minion.”

Research by ThePerryNews.com has revealed that “Minions” is an animated children’s movie currently playing at the Perry Grand 3 Theaters and elsewhere. It is a sequel to the 2010 blockbuster, “Despicable Me.”

Vodenik, as a member of the Perry Historic Preservation Commission, has an eye for whimsical old things among us, but he is also sensitive to the new right now.

“He took 2 large roll hay bales, stacked them and painted it like a minion,” Vodenik said. “So neat.”

According to Illumination Entertainment, producers of the animated children’s movie, “Evolving from single-celled yellow organisms at the dawn of time, Minions live to serve but find themselves working for a continual series of unsuccessful masters, from T. Rex to Napoleon.

“Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one minion, Kevin, has a plan. Accompanied by his pals Stuart and Bob, Kevin sets forth to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. Their search leads them to Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess.”

Variety magazine reports the film has grossed $262 million in the U.S. since its June 17 opening and more than $500 million in overseas markets.

“The comedy opened in first place in 55 territories, setting the record in 29 markets, including Brazil, France, Mexico, Russia and the U.K., for biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated movie,” according to Variety’s Dave McNary.
