HUXLEY — Oh for a few more Wheaties at breakfast.
With a little more power — or a better angle — Perry likely would have scored five additional goals during Tuesday’s Raccoon River Conference meeting with host Ballard. As it was, the Jayettes found the back of the net just once, and while goalie Amparo Menenedez made seven saves she was under assault most of the match, resulting in a 7-1 Bomber victory.
“We had two balls that beat the keeper, but she got back to stop it on the goal line,” Perry assistant coach Fred Niebaum said. “If they had been kicked a touch harder they would have gone in. We also had three one-on-one opportunities against the goalie where we just put the ball right in her lap. It was a disappointing loss for us.”
“Ballard is very similar to us, but the came out and played physical and swarmed the ball, which led to many scoring opportunities,” he added. “We started without Erica (Tenold, a senior starting defenseman) due to an injury. She was able to tough it out and played the rest of the game after coming in late in the first half.”
Perry’s lone goal came when Haley Vaughn scored for the first time this season in the 24th minute. Vaughn’s goal came off an assist from Grace Marburger, her fourth assist of the year.
Ballard improved to 5-3, 3-1 with the win while Perry fell to 4-8, 1-4. The Jayettes are off until May 12 when they host ADM, with a trip to Carroll slated for May 14.
