An accidental burning at Tyson Fresh Meats in Perry shortly before noon Monday led to two male victims life flighted to Des Moines hospitals and two others with minor injuries seeking medical attention on their own.

The Dallas County EMS responded to the incident, with the Perry Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff’s office assisting at the pork processing plant, which employs about 1,200 workers.

Dallas County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Adam Infante said the “workplace accident” did not involve fire. “The burns were the result of steam,” he said. “I don’t know how or why that happened, but there was no actual fire in the building.”

Infante said the Dallas County EMS “did a fantastic job, given their circumstances.” Monday’s high winds did not appear to impair the function of the helicopters.

Alberto Olguin, human resource manager at the Perry plant, said the circumstances of the accident are under investigation.

“I have no idea at this point anymore than you already know,” Olguin said. “We at the moment are not really aware of anything but they got burned. They are being treated. Hopefully, soon we will have more knowledge.”
