Naturalist’s Notebook

On April 5 Joe Warnock, Steve Sohn and I did a two-and-a-half-hour float on the North Raccoon River from the bridge at County Road P-58 to the Snyder Boat Ramp near Minburn.  The wind was gusting at times and made paddling more of a physical challenge for the trio, but we agreed it was worth the effort.

It was our first time on the river this year. Canada geese honked at us at every turn in the stream, and it seemed as if wood ducks flew out of every log jam.

We made another outing April 30, with more beautiful scenery to show for it.
