State titles in seven classes of high school football will be earned Wednesday and Thursday.

BOONE — The IAHSAA has released the prep football district assignments for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, including newly-resized classes that includes the creation of a new 5A. The largest class includes the 36 largest schools in Iowa.

That move has pushed Perry into Class 4A, a 36-team class with six districts, which is also how 3A has been established. Both classes will play nine regular season games, with the top two teams in each district, plus four at-large schools, creating a playoff pool of 16 teams.

Perry will be paired with Bondurant-Farrar, Boone, Carlisle, Indianola, and Norwalk in the new 4A District 5. ADM joins Atlantic, Creston, Harlan, Knoxville, and Saydel in 3A District 6.

Both Class 2A and 1A will have eight districts and 48 total teams, with the top four in each district reaching the postseason. Teams will play eight regular season games.

Greene County will play in 2A District 8 with Clarinda, Clarke, Des Moines Christian, Red Oak, and Shenandoah.

In 1A the new District 7 will include Panorama, AC/GC, Interstate-35, Van Meter, and West Central Valley, with District 2 composed of Woodward-Granger, Belmond-Klemme, Eagle Grove, NW Webster, South Central Calhoun, and South Hamilton.

Class A has 56 teams and eight districts with the top 32 reaching the playoffs and will, like 8-player up through 2A, play eight regular season games. District 6 will feature Madrid, Ogden, Belle Plaine, Colfax-Mingo, Lynnville-Sully, North Mahaska, and Wayne.

Woodward Academy has dropped to 8-player and will be in District 7. They will compete against Baxter, BGM, Grandview Christian, Melcher-Dallas, Montezuma, and Twin Cedars.

Teams playing only eight regular season games and failing to reach the postseason can schedule a ninth game against another non-qualifier if they so desire.
