The Guthrie County Sheriff’s office received a report about 8:19 p.m. Sunday of a man threatening people with a knife in an apartment house at 502 W. Market St. in Panora.

Joshua Blake Reed, 26, of New Virginia, Iowa, died Sunday evening after he refused to drop the knife he was holding when confronted by Panora Police Department Officer Rock Armstrong, who responded about 8:30 p.m. to an apartment building at 502 W. Market St. in Panora.

Armstrong located Reed in the apartment hallway armed with a knife, according to the DCI, and Armstrong ordered Reed to drop the knife several times, but Reed refused to drop the knife.

Armstrong “engaged the subject and fired his weapon,” striking Reed, who “was given medical aid but later died from his injuries,” according to the DCI statement.

The Iowa State Medical Examiner in Ankeny ruled the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide after concluding an autopsy Tuesday, the DCI said.

Armstrong has been placed on paid administrative leave until the completion of the investigation.

The Panora Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Crime Scene Team from the DCI Criminalistics Laboratory, the Guthrie County Sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol.
