In the absence of scholarship applicants, the Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter has decided to extend the application deadline until April 23 for its two $500 scholarships. The monies are available to any college junior or senior from Dallas County who is currently studying education.
The Nu Alpha Gamma Chapter, whose membership is composed of current and retired teachers from Dallas County, offers the financial support every year to up-and-coming educators. Interested applicants are urged to contact Maureen Becker at 515-465-2034 or mrgebecker@gmail.com as soon as possible.
The chapter’s April meeting also put the finishing touches on the May 5 ceremony to be held at the Alton Schoolhouse at Forest Park Museum, 14581 K Ave. in Perry. The occasion will be the unveiling of a new interactive exhibit created by Nu Alpha Gamma.
Visitors to the preserved school will now be able to hear about rural school life at the push of a button. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a video of former students at the one-room school sharing their stories. Activities will then progress to the schoolhouse itself for a formal dedication of the new exhibit.
In other business, 10 chapter members were recognized for their long-term membership, ranging from 15 years to 50 years. Those recognized were Marilyn Bode, Sharon Ulrich, Klista Meis, JoAnn Harmelink, Julie Spellman, Marti Klatt, Cathy Clark, Marilyn Lynch, Barb Burket and Clarice Ross.
New officers elected for 2018-2020 were President Marilyn Bode, First Vice President Sharon Ulrich, Second Vice President Deb Irving, Recording Secretary Roxy Swartz and Corresponding Secretary Sue Leslie.
