The National Weather Service offices in Des Moines have extended until Monday at 7 p.m. the heat advisory in effect since last Thursday.

Central Iowans can expect one more day of hot and humid conditions, with high temperatures on Monday again forecast to be in the low to mid 90s and dewpoints in the lower 70s.

This combination of heat and humidity will produce heat index values of 100 to 105  degrees.

The overnight lows are forecast to remain in the 70s, providing little relief from the heat.

In addition to the hot and humid conditions, gusty winds are forecast through the day Monday, and with stronger winds comes an increased risk of dehydration.

A cold front is anticipated to move into northern Iowa Monday evening, but some locations in Iowa will remain hot for the better part of the day Tuesday until the front moves south.

Remember to drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade if you work or have sports activities outside and wear lightweight clothing.

To minimize the risk of heat-induced illness, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned
room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. Avoid drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they cause dehydration.

Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, so call 9 1 1.
