The National Weather Service (NWS) offices in Des Moines issued a winter weather advisory Monday afternoon at 3:50 p.m. The advisory is in effect until midnight across central Iowa.

The NWS forecast calls for a transition from rain and drizzle to a brief wintry mix and then to all snow during the Monday evening commute.

Strong winds are expected to develop during the changeover from rain to snow, and the winds are likely to cause reduced visibility at times, the NWS said. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph will cause patchy blowing and drifting snow.

Accumulations of snow up to one inch and very light ice accumulations are expected.

Motorists should expect slippery road conditions, with periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain causing travel difficulties. Motorist should use caution due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Current road conditions for Iowa can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
