GILBERT — The first two Perry batters to step to the plate in the top of the second inning Tuesday were put out quietly. By the time host Gilbert could record another out, 10 more Jayettes had stepped to the plate and seven had scored, helping to lift Perry to a 7-0 non-conference victory.

Sophomore Emma Olejniczak befuddled Tiger batters through seven innings, with the primary Perry starter allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 12.

Olejniczak is sixth overall in Iowa with 141 strikeouts. She is 11 shy of ADM’s Molly Jacobsen for the lead in Class 4A; the duo will square off for the second time this season tonight. The teams met June 5 in Perry, with ADM winning, 6-1. Jacobsen had 11 strikeouts for the Tigers and Olejniczak 12 for the Jayettes.

It was Olejniczak who started the Perry explosion in the second Tuesday. She singled to begin the rally, then stole second base. Rachel Kinney followed with a walk, with Alyssa Kruger doubling home both runs. Kruger scored when Victoria Hegstrom singled, with a walk to Katelyn Whelchel putting two Perry runners on base.

Sidney Vancil hit a double to score Whelchel, with a walk to Brooke Huntington loaded the bases. Maddy West walked to force in a run, with Johanna Diw singling home two more runs before the Tigers finally got out of the inning.

Hegstrom was 2-for-4 with a double, with Olejniczak recording two hits. Kinney, Huntington and Diw added singles, with Kruger and Vancil smacking doubles.

Perry (4-11 overall) will host Saydel Thursday after tonight’s trip to Adel. Thursday’s game will be Youth Softball Night, with players from the PGSA taking part in ceremonies between the JV and varsity games.
