COON Rapids, Iowa — An Alabama man was killed and another injured Wednesday morning when an SUV collided head-on with a semi-tractor trailer on Iowa Highway 141 about five miles west of Coon Rapids, the Iowa State Patrol said in a crash report.

James Stoval, 29, of Mobile, Alabama, was traveling westbound on Iowa Highway 141 in a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe about 5:45 a.m. As he approached the intersection of 330th Street in rural Carroll County, his vehicle “went left of center and collided” with an oncoming 2023 International semi, driven by Derek Pittenger, 34, of Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, that was traveling eastbound on the same roadway.

Stoval’s vehicle struck the cable barriers on the north shoulder, where it came to rest, the crash report said. Stoval died as a result of his injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Pittenger’s vehicle came to rest in the south ditch. Pittenger was injured in the crash and transported to St. Anthony Hospital by Carroll County EMS. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
