Dear Perry families, staff and community members,

One year ago, our school community faced an unimaginable tragedy that profoundly changed all our lives. On this solemn remembrance, we pause to honor the memory of Ahmir Johlliff and Dan Marburger and acknowledge the seven students and staff who were injured.

At this time, we also recognize the pain, resilience and strength that have marked our journey over the past year.

This time is a moment for reflection, not just on those we’ve lost, but on how we’ve come
together as a community to heal and rebuild. This year has also shown us the power of unity. From the moments of silence and candlelight vigils to the countless messages of hope and support, we have witnessed the best of humanity amidst our grief.

With the support of the District Recovery Team, which comprises 30 members representing students, staff and the community, the Perry Schools are providing professional counseling services at the Perry Public Library, 1101 Willis Ave. on Friday, Jan. 3 and Saturday, Jan. 4 for any student, staff or community member who wishes to talk with a mental health counselor. (These will not be our school counselors.)

Additionally, if parents wish to visit with a professional counselor after dropping off their children at school on Monday, Jan. 6 and Tuesday, Jan. 7, mental health counselors will be available at Perry Public Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both of those days for free drop–in services.

On Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m., the Perry Ministerial Association is providing an
opportunity for the community to come together for a service of Hope and Healing. This service will be held at 1221 Second St. in the former Ben Franklin building, with a time for fellowship following the service.

If you or someone you know is struggling during this time, please know that help is available. A list of available resources can be found on the Perry Community School District website at www.perry.k12.ia.us.

Thank you for your continued support and trust. Together, we will heal, we will grow and we will move forward as one resilient community.

With gratitude,

Clark Wicks, Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Mandy Ross, Recovery Coordinator
Perry Community School District
