A Clive man was arrested for drunk driving early Thursday after he was allegedly found hiding in a ditch a short distance from where he crashed his car on the interstate.

Neil Douglas Davies, 65, of 8421 University Ave., Clive, was charged with first-offense OWI, failure to maintain control and leaving the scene of an accident-property damage only.

The incident began about 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the 11000 block of eastbound U.S. Interstate 80, where officers of the Clive Police Department investigated a single-vehicle crash.

The responding officers found the vehicle empty, and Davies was found “approximately 15 minutes later, hiding in a drainage ditch from officers approximately 200 yards east of the accident scene,” according to court records.

Davies allegedly presented “signs of intoxication, such as an odor of an alcoholic beverage resonating from his breath and impaired balance,” according to court records. He blew a 0.096.

Davies is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,575.76 cash or surety bond in advance of an initial appearance Thursday in Dallas County District Court.

Davies was issued a citation in 2014 for leaving the scene of an accident-property damage only at the intersection of U.S. Highway 169 and Iowa Highway 141. The charge was later dismissed in Dallas County District Court.
