The 21st annual Lights On After School program, hosted by PACES (Perry’s Academic Cultural and Enrichment Services), was abbreviated by the virus and brought indoors by the chilly weather, but the many children of Perry’s essential workers were as enthusiastic as ever.

Longtime PACES Director Mary Hillman led the children in the Pledge of Allegiance before introducing the guest speakers, Perry Mayor John Andorf and Perry Community School District Superintendent Clark Wicks.

Hillman is justly proud of the efforts her students and staff have made to mitigate SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Since June 1, PACES has registered zero positive cases for the virus.

“We are serving a lot of families that really need our support,” Hillman said, “and one year ago I would have never guessed that we’d be at the place we’re at with the COVID virus. We have been open since June 1 and covered nine weeks of summer, 12 hours a day, and have been open since the start of school.”

Mayor Andorf congratulated PACES on keeping virus free and providing before- and after-school care for the children of essential workers.

“It’s always important but this year more than ever that we have a program such as PACES,” said Andorf. “Perry’s very fortunate. So many communities and cities do not have a program like this, and they’re really missing it this year, when the COVID’s running rampant and has for some time now. We really need a place to support our children after school, and it also allows our parents to be able to attend work without having to be concerned about their children.”

Superintendent Wicks praised the children for all wearing face masks.

“It is such a tricky bug,” Wicks said. “You guys are such great models for our whole school on what we need to do.” When PACES started its summer classes, it was “a very scary time,” he said. “People didn’t know whether they could go out of their house, if we could go to the store, if we could do anything. It was really, really scary. And then to start PACES. You guys were the ones we were all looking to to see how things went.”

And things went well for the PACES kids with zero infections.

“I have Perry Pride, and you guys make me have even more Perry Pride,” Wicks said.

Before presenting the awards for the Lights On coloring, poster and essay contests, Hillman announced three recent grants totaling $13,250. PACES pays for all its programming through fundraising.

Y luego empezar a PACES.
