PANORA — Cold weather and the threat of rain caused the cancellations of some high school events Monday, but the boys and girls golf teams from AC/GC and Woodward-Granger managed to battle through nine holes at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

“We started out with about 55 degree, overcast weather and ended with 40 degrees and mist!” Panther girls head coach Melissa Hochstetler said. “All the girls worked very hard and battled through.”

W-G shot a 250 to best the Panorama girls, who carded a combined 267. AC/GC had only three girls competing and thus could not generate a team score.

Two-time boys Class 2A defending state champion Panorama posted a 165 to top W-G, who had a 189, and AC/GC, which needed 300 strokes to finish.

Will Babcock, individual state champion in 2015, blistered LPN with a one-under par 35 to easily claim medalist honors. Teammate Colby Shackelford and George Appleseth both had rounds of 40 for runner-up honors, with Mitch Wagler carding a 50. Rounds of 50 from Dylan Douglass and of 56 from Jacob Iseminger were not used for the team score.

Nick Brummond’s 44 led W-G, with Austin Ober shooting 47 and both Brady Aunspach and Joe Rhodes 49. Max Helbling had a 52 and Hunter Pierce a 60, but neither were tabulated.

Spencer Grove (63), McKlain Jorgensen (68), Casson Benson (76) and Austin Hall (93) made the rounds for AC/GC.

Cierra DeHoet paced the W-G girls and claimed medalist honors with a 58. Aubrey Mescher had a 61, Ashland James a 64 and Paige Mescher a 67 for the Hawks.

Maggie Smith’s 60 was the runner-up medalist round and led the hosts. Madi Fear had a 65, Cassie Labath a 70 and Taylor Raibikis a 72. The 76 provided by Alex Kurtz and the 77 tallied by Anna Duis were discarded.

Haley Sheeder (77), Leanna Stringer (82) and Kena Baier (100) played for AC/GC.

Three Panthers played as junior varsity, with Lauren McClatchey shooting a 68, Chloe Webster a 72 and Jensen Wilke a 79.

The Panorama boys return to action for an invitational Thursday at Jester Park hosted Des Moines Christian while the Panther girls are off until Monday when they play in the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational at Terrace Hills in Altoona. The Panther boys will begin play at Thursday at 1 p.m. with the girls starting at 2 p.m. Monday.
