Panorama matmen compete in Friday invite

LEON — Panorama was one of 13 teams competing Friday in the Dan Christensen Invitational at Central Decatur. Despite leaving four weight classes open (106, 113, 132 and 285 pounds) the Panthers managed to score 119.5 points and finish sixth overall.

Red Oak scored 182.5 points to win the event, with Van Meter/Earlham second at 179.5 and Mid-Buchanon (Mo.) third at 152.5. Davis County (139) was fourth and Waterloo West (135) fifth, with Panorama (119.5) sixth. Martensdale-St. Marys (117), Albia (106), Mt. Ayr (98), Central Decatur (82), SE Warren/Melcher-Dallas (72), Wayne (67) and Clarinda Academy (24) completed the field.

Three Panthers — 145-pounder Emry Colby, 152-pounder Wyatt Appleseth and 220-pound matman James Hein — were all champions of their respective brackets.

Colby finished 4-0 with two pins, a technical fall and a decision, with Appleseth 3-0 with a pin, major decision and decision while Hein was 3-0 with two pins and a decision.

Ryan Fees was 3-2 with two pins and a decision to finish fourth at 138 pounds, with Logan Christe 2-3 at 120 pounds, where he placed sixth with both wins by fall.

Placing eighth were Dillon Bennett (2-3, with two pins) at 170, Keyton Van Gundy 1-3 (pin) at 195 while Landon Goodenberger came up empty in three matches at 160 pounds.

Brayden Hoffman (126) and Kael Wirt (152) were also in action, but both were eliminated without placing after each dropped their first two matches.

Panorama will join AC/GC and Ogden for a quadrangular at SE Valley (Gowrie) Thursday before hosting the WCAC Tournament Saturday.
