PANORA — The ground game chewed up 267 yards to help Panorama fend off visiting Colfax-Mingo in their non-district football opener Friday.

Cayden VanMeer was 7-of-15 for 81 yards and Austin Block added 30 yards on a completion to account for the Panorama passing attack — the chief weapon of the Panther attack last season.

Friday saw the hosts turn to the rushing game, with Ryan Cogil ripping off 202 yards and scoring twice on 20 carries while Austin Block scored once on eight rushes that gained 59 yards. Gavin Godfrey (1-5), VanMeer (4-0) and Kyle McClatchey (1-0) also toted the pigskin.

Godfrey (2-38), Josh VanWinkle (3-36), Nile Lindstrom (2-31), and Klayton Bremer (1-6) had catches for the hosts.

Cogil got the home crowd worked up in the first quarter by returning an interception 80 yards for a touchdown.

A short TD run by the TigerHawks gave the visitors a 7-6 lead after one frame, but a four-yard Cogil run and a two-point conversion put the Panthers in front, 14-7, at the break.

The score stood at 20-7 after three frames, with Block busting in from seven yards out for the only points in the stanza.

A five-yard scoring strike brought C-M to within 20-14 in the fourth, with Cogil pushing the margin to 26-14 by ripping off a 70-yard scoring jaunt. A 10-yard TigerHawk run moved the scoreboard to 26-21 late in the fourth, but the hosts were able to hold on for the win.

VanWinkle led the Panorama defense with eight tackles, with Godfrey and Cogil making six stops apiece. Jared Wasson and Cooper Andersen each had five tackles, with Cogil and Wyatt Carstens both intercepting a pass.

Panorama visits Pella Christian Friday while C-M hosts Clarke.
