MARSHALLTOWN — Kolby Shackelford was an individual state golf tourney qualifier last season as a freshman. The Panorama standout finished 13th at the Class 2A meet while helping his team place third.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

The Panthers did not qualify for the state tourney this year, but Shackelford backed up his status as one of the best young players in the state by securing a return engagement this season.

On Thursday the sophomore fired a two-over par 72 to finish in a three-way tie for second place, trailing only Kuemper Catholic senior Jared Tigges, who carded a 71.

Joining Shackelford with rounds of 72 were Tyler Merley of Sheldon and Bo Weissenfluh of Dike-New Harford. PCM senior Noah Lanphier was a stroke back, in fifth place, with a 73.

Kuemper Catholic holds the team lead at 302, with Des Moines Christian (308) and PCM (313) threatening.

Shackelford will tee off in the next-to-last group at 9:21 a.m. today in the second and final day of action. He will be joined on the 10th tee by Merley and senior Drew Olsen of Osage (77).
