Panorama wrestlers place high at invite

COON RAPIDS — Panorama placed fourth in the eight-team Coon Rapids-Bayard Invite Saturday, with two Panthers winning their respective weight class and another placing second.

South Central Calhoun won the event with 213 points, with Riverside the runner-up at 167. East Sac County nipped Panorama, 145-144.5, for third place.

Junior Wyatt Appleseth, ranked fifth at 152 pounds in Class 2A, won his weight class with a technical fall (19-1, 1 minutes, 49 seconds) and with a pin. His stick in the finals was career victory 100 for the two-time state tourney qualifier, who moves to 19-0 for the season.

Tenth-rated Emry Colby moved to 22-1 at 145 pounds by winning his division. Colby was crowned champ after all three of his wins came by fall.

Logan Christe (17-6) also reached the finals, placing second at 120 pounds. Christe was 1-1, his win coming on a 12-2 major decision.

The Panthers received third-place points at 182, 195 and 220. Cooper Anderson (10-3) and Keyton Van Gundy (11-14) were both 2-1 with two pins at 182 and 195, respectively, with James Hein (18-5) 2-1 at 220 with wins by fall and by decision.

Dillon Bennett (9-9) was 1-2 with a pin to place fourth at 170 pounds, with Ryan Fees (15-12) fourth and Kael Wirt (4-8) sixth after both competed at 138. Fees finished 2-2 with two pins, with Wirt 1-3 with a pin.

Panorama also received double-points at 160, with Landon Goodenberger (14-10) fifth and Josh Sparks (2-6) sixth. The former was 2-2 with two pins, with the latter 1-3 with a pin.

Jayden Howard (4-7) was also in action for the Panthers, but suffered a pair of losses before he could earn a victory at 182 pounds.

The Panthers left the 106, 113, 126, 132 and 285 pound weight classes open.

Panorama will host East Union, Martensdale-St. Marys and Southwest Valley for a quadrangular Thursday before traveling to Perry for the Bluejay Invitational Saturday.
