The Panthers finished fourth in the Class 2A state meet, with junior Shackelford winning the individual state championship. Shackelford tied for 19th at the National High School Tournament last month in Florida.

CARROLL — The Panorama boys golf team will play Thursday and Friday in the Class 2A State Tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown as a result of the Panthers placing third in Friday’s district tourney.

Woodward-Granger was also in action at the Carroll Country Club, but the Hawks were unable to secure a spot in the final tourney.

Kuemper Catholic won the district meet with a 312, with Des Moines Christian shooting a 318. As Kuemper was the host team, the third spot was also allowed to advance, and that was claimed by Panorama, who carded a 353. Roland-Story shot a 360, Clarinda 361, Ogden 366, W-G 403 and Tri-Center 412.

Panorama junior Kolby Shackelford won a four-way playoff to earn overall medalist accolades. He shot a 38-36–74, or three-over par. DMC’s Matt Wynne (39-35–74) and Nate Juffer (39-35–74) and Kuemper’s Corbin Borelli (38-36–74) joined Shackelford in the playoff.

A proud Panorama head coach David Van Ahn described Shackelford’s masterful playoff victory.

“Kolby put on a terrific display of golf,” he said. “He drove to within 15 yards of the green on the 396-yard par-4 first playoff hole. He then chipped to within 15 inches of the cup, made the putt, and the honor was his. It has been nothing but terrific play by this young man throughout the entire season.”

Shackelford will be returning to a course he knows well, as he was second in the state tourney last year with a five-over par 145 over two days. He was 13th at the 2017 state toruney as a freshman.

Also scoring for Panorama was Lucas Leiferman (49-42–91), Wyatt Appleseth (46-48–94) and Dylan Douglass (45-49–94). Trey Cobb (46-50–96) and Ryan Klinge (58-45–103) were also in action for the Panthers.

“The rest of the team faced some adversity, but, as always, persevered through it all,” Van Ahn said. “Golf can be a game that challenges your physical as well as mental strength, but the team endured and lives to play two more days of competitive golf.”

Woodward-Granger received a 47-46–93 from Coby Peters and a 49-47–96 from Trey Lettow to lead the way. Nick Buch provided a 52-52–104 and Hunter Pifer a 58-52–110, while Colby Tague’s 58-57–115 was not used for the team score.

The season ended for the Hawks Friday, but the squad showed improvement throughout the spring and reached the second round of the postseason for the first time in several seasons.

Kuemper was led by Bortelli, Dawson McDermott (41-37–78), Will Schekelberg (39-40–79) and Ethan Pietig (41-40–81). Cole Collison (42-39–81) and Jack Tiefenthaler (47-42–89) were also in action for the Knights.

Wynne and Juffer were joined by Jake Weissenburger (41-40–81) and Grant Christy (48-41–89) in scoring for DMC. The Lions also had Tommy Weissenburger (44-48–92) and Nick Nelson (47-46–93) make the circuit.

Ogden’s scores came from Casper Carson (44-44–88), Ryan Nichols (45-45–90), Preston Gronseth (47-45–92) and Jacob Kathman (48-48–96). Also playing for the Bulldogs were Kayden Kruse (49-47–96) and Mason Hill (54-50–104).
