Panther girls, boys cap regular season on winning note

PANORA — The Panorama basketball teams concluded their regular seasons with a pair of WCAC victories over visiting West Central Valley Tuesday.

The Panorama girls finished with a share of the conference championship at 14-1 overall while completing the regular season at 18-3 overall after a 54-44 win. WCV fell to 12-9 and 8-7 with the defeat.

The Panther boys (15-6, 12-4) were 79-30 victors over the Wildcats (1-20, 0-16) in a game that saw a whopping 63 3-point shots launched by the two teams.

It was bombs away in the nightcap, with the hosts the far more accurate shooters. The Panthers hit 17-of-30 beyond the 3-point arc, with the Wildcats landing just 5-of-33 such attempts. Oddly, the teams struggled more at the foul line, with Panorama sinking 4-of-9 at the stripe and WCV just 1-of-6.

Panorama exploded from the start, blistering the nylon for 36 points in the first eight minutes to grab a 36-11 lead. A 17-5 scoring run in the second quarter pushed the halftime score to 53-16, ending any drama.

Senior Kolby Shackelford had scored 25 points and connected on six 3-pointers in a 70-58 Panther win over visiting Martensdale-St. Marys Monday. His torrid streak continued Tuesday as he went off for 26 points, burying eight treys in the process.

Malachi Peasley had 15 points and Michael Allen 11, with Wil Jones adding six points and Brice Taylor five. Trent Hambleton scored four points, Lucas Leiferman and Dominic Walker three apiece and Drew Taylor, Preston Walker and Gavin Godfrey two points each.

Peasley hit three 3-pointers, Allen and Jones two each, and Leiferman and Brice Taylor one apiece.

WCV was led by eight points from Jake Egger and six from Ismael Leyva, with Tate Richter adding four points. Grant Caltrider and Carson Powell tallied three points apiece, with Hunter Keller and Jackson Doyle two each.

The Panorama girls seized control of their game from the opening tip by opening a 17-2 lead after one quarter and heading into the locker room holding a 32-16 advantage. WCV could not close the gap in the third stanza, which ended with the hosts leading, 47-30.

Ella Waddle led the Panthers with 16 points, with Angel Poldberg providing 14 points. Payton Beckman and Laci Rishel had 10 points apiece, with Anna Holloway and Shey Storesund each scoring two points.

Waddle splashed four 3-pointers, Beckman and Rishel two each and Poldberg one.

Sydney Neal’s 14 points paced WCV. Michaela Jaeger had eight points and Jenna Merical seven, with Madelyn Jaeger, Cathy Marlow, and Presley Pivonka four each, while three points from Isabella Munoz capped the scoring list.

The Panorama girls will host the winner of Friday’s Class 2A Region 3 First Round game between AC/GC and WCV Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.

The Panther boys will host the Feb. 17 winner of AC/GC and WCV Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in Class 2A District 15 play.
