Panthers sending numerous events to state track meet

The Panorama girls have secured 10 spots and the boys three positions, with several at-large bids likely to be awarded as well.

PANORA — The Panorama girls track team was as proficient at Thursday’s State Qualifying Meet as they have been in recent weeks, winning seven events and placing second in three others to guarantee appearances in at least 10 events at next week’s state track meet.

First and second-place finishers in each event earned a slot at Drake Stadium, with eight at-large bids also up for grabs, and the Panthers girls are likely to add to their total when the final field is set this afternoon.

The Panorama boys had three runner-up finishers earn spots at state, with a pair of strong third-place efforts likely to add two more entries to their total.

The Panther girls won the team title with 135 points, with AC/GC second at 110 and Madrid third at 108 in an 11-team field.

Madrid’s 142 points won the boys side, with Woodward Academy second at 118 and South Central Calhoun third on 96 points. Panorama was sixth in the 12-team boys meet with 56 points.

Devyn Kemble will run in four events on the blue oval after the junior won the 400 in 1 minute, 1.29 seconds and the 800 in 2:23.12. She anchored a runner-up placing in the sprint medley (1:53.57) and a victorious 4×400 (4:13.17). Bailey Beckman, Carson Fisher and Brooke Halterman ran with Kemble on the former relay, with Beckman, Morgan Johnk and Brianna Hoffman running on the latter.

Johnk had a strong meet as well, winning the high jump at 5 feet, 5 inches, placing second in the 100 hurdles in 16.01 seconds and anchoring the winning shuttle hurdle (1:10.02) that included Maggie Woodvine, Payton Douglass and Maddie Knapp.

Douglass was third in the 400 in 1:04.96, a time clearly in contention for an at-large bid, while Woodvine was eighth in the 100 hurdles in 17.7.

Lydia Knapp won the discus at 123’9 to earn a state spot, with Beckman’s runner-up distance of 16’8-1/4 in the long jump sending the sophomore to state in the event. Teammate Kassidy Bremer landed at 16’2 to place sixth, with Kennedy Andersen eighth in the shot put at 34’11-3/4.

Hoffman, Brooklyn Behrends, Emily Smith and Lydia Lindstrom won the 4×800 in 10:28.88, with Kellie Prince, Hope Arganbright, Lindstrom and Behrends sixth in the distance medley in 4:51.13.

Placing fourth, in 52.88 and 1:54.62, respectively, were the 4×100 unit of Douglass, Fisher, Beckman and Bremer and the 4×200 foursome of Fisher, Hoffman, Bremer and Halterman.

Hoffman’s 5:36.05 earned fourth place in the 1500, with Vallerie Storesund seventh (13:36.04) and Taylor Rishel eighth (13:38.21) in the 3000. Bremer was sixth in the 200 (28.63) and Fisher eighth in the 100 (13.49), with Douglass and Lindstrom 6-7 in the 400 hurdles in 1:15.45 and 1:15.92.

Spencer Hunt rose to occasion for the host boys, besting his own seeded placing to place second in the 200 (23.83) and 400 (52.08) to earn spots on the blue oval.

Matthew Webner’s spin of 163 feet in the discus placed second, with Daniel Jensen third at 150’11, a distance almost certain to earn a high at-large bid. Panorama also scored in the long jump, with Allias Stahl landing at 18’5 for eighth place.

Also very much in contention for an at-large spot is Luke South in the 400 low hurdles after his third-place showing of 58.84. He was fifth in the 110 high hurdles in 16.37.

Connner Meinecke, Bryce Halterman, Blaine Barber and Hunt placed fifth in the 4×100 (46.2) and fifth in the sprint medley (1:39.7), with Meinecke, Barber, Stahl and Hunt sixth in the 4×200 (1:38.87) while Danny Nordquist, Levi Richer, Kaleb Randel and Benny Barroso crossed seventh in the 4×800 (9:31.15).

Nordquist ran a 4:49.76 to place eighth in the 1600, with Josh Carstens eighth, in 10:45.31, in the 3200.
