Panthers sending trio on to district tourney

WINTERSET — Three wrestlers will represent Panorama Feb. 13 at the Class 2A District 3 tourney in Creston after advancing from their sectional meet Saturday.

Host Winterset had 266 points to win the Sectional 6 team honors, with Atlantic/CAM second at 235 and Panorama third at 138.5 Central Decatur (98.5), Clarke (96), and Chariton (83) were also involved in the action.

Second-ranked Wyatt Appleseth (41-0) will be seeking his fourth trip to the state tourney after cruising to the sectional title at 160 pounds. He received on opening bye, then won by injury default before pinning Kael Forsyth (29-10) of Winterset in 1 minute, 40 seconds to win his bracket.

Cooper Andersen, rated eighth, lifted his gaudy record at 220 to 35-2 with a top podium spot as well. He opened with a win by fall, then dispatched Jake Smith (25-3) of Clarke with a 9-5 decision.

The pair will be joined in Creston by Panther 138-pounder Cayden Van Meer (18-20). He won by injury default before suffering a loss by fall, but bounced back to claim a 6-3 victory and a spot at the district event.

Landon Goodenberger (19-18) was 1-2 with a pin at 170 and Colby Waltz (4-10) 0-2 at 182 as both placed third, just missing a chance to continue their respective seasons.

Logan Christe (25-7 at 126), was 1-2 with a pin, Ryan Fees (20-20 at 145) 1-2 with a pin, and Kael Wirt (5-6 at 152) 1-2 with a 16-0 technical fall as each finished third for Panorama, with Maddox Munn (6-18 at 113) dropping his only match to finish fifth.

Also fifth was heavyweight Jared Henderson (16-20) who lost his only match, with Keyton Van Gundy (4-7) 0-2 at 195.

Panorama did not have wrestlers competing at 106, 120, and 132 pounds.
