Panthers split non-conference pair with host Blue Devils Friday

MARTENSDALE — A decisive fourth quarter lifted host Martensdale-St. Marys to a 53-46 win over Panorama in boys non-conference basketball Friday, with the visiting girls seizing control of their match in the first half en route to a 63-34 victory.

The sixth-ranked Panorama girls (20-1) turned a five-point lead after one quarter into an 11-point advantage, up 29-18, at the intermission of the opener. A 19-11 third frame pushed the lead to 48-29, all but settling the issue.

Bailey Beckman led all scorers with 24 points while contributing three assists and three steals. The all-time scoring leader at Panorama will enter postseason play with 1,544 points to her credit.

Fellow senior Morgan Johnk tore up the statistic sheet for the third consecutive game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and four blocked shots. Johnk has scored 36 points, cleared 23 boards, made 19 assists, snatched 10 steals and swatted 10 blocks over the past three games.

Payton Beckman had eight points and four thefts, Lydia Knapp seven points, four caroms and two blocks and Shey Storesund six points for the visitors, with Brooke Halterman and Ella Waddle each scoring two points.

Maddy Stott had 15 points for a solid M-SM (15-4) squad. Jensen Archibald had nine points, Sophia Gibson six and Tori Reynolds and Jackie Kleve two apiece.

Panorama (11-10) was in front, 13-11, after the first quarter of the boys game, but M-SM (17-2) slipped in front, 23-22, at the break. The teams were tied at 36-all entering the fourth quarter, but the hosts were able to use a 17-10 scoring edge over the final eight minutes to turn aside the Panther upset bid.

Gracen Welberg had 14 points for the guests, with Kolby Shackelford providing 11 points and Zach Rizzuti seven. Malachi Peasley had six points and Evan Taylor four, with Dominic Walker adding three points and Trey Cobb one to the scoring list.

Welberg grabbed nine rebounds and made three steals, with Rizzuti and Cobb each clearing four boards while Shackelford passed out three assists.

Trey Baker led the Blue Devils with 18 points while securing 10 boards and blocking four shots. Carson Elbert had 12 points, while 6-8 junior Isaac Gavin added 10 points and 10 rebounds while rejecting six shots.

Six points from Hogan Franey, five from Jack Franey and two from Esa Johanson capped the scoring for the hosts.

The Panther boys are scheduled to face host WCV in Stuart at 8 p.m. Monday in a Class 2A District 13 contest. The will follow a 6:30 p.m. battle between Mt. Ayr and AC/GC. The winner faces Woodward-Granger Thursday at 6:30 in Urbandale at DMC, with the hosts to play the winner of Monday’s first game in Stuart.

Panorama is slated to host W-G Tuesday in a girls 2A Region 7 quarterfinal. The winner plays in Adel Friday against the winner of Tuesday’s scrum between Nodaway Valley and Southwest Valley.
