Panthers take advantage of miscues to wrestle win from Hawks

PANORA — The Woodward-Granger and Panorama softball teams combined for 17 runs on 19 hits, but it was three of the nine errors committed in the game that proved most damaging.

Leading 6-5 after five innings, the host Panthers scored four times with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks in large part to three Hawk errors.

W-G closed scored twice times in their final at-bat, but it was not enough to overcome a five-run deficit as Panorama held on for the 10-7 victory.

Miranda Aunspach opened the game with a double and scored when Bree Lesch reached on an outfield error to give the guests a 1-0 lead.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the second when Alison Soelberg and Aunspach singled and scored when Lesch lined a three-run home run to left center.

Two runs in the second and one in the third helped draw the hosts to within a run, but Soelberg reached on an error and scored on a Lesch base hit int he fourth as W-G went widened their lead to 5-3.

Three runs in the bottom of the stanza pushed the home team into a 6-5 advantage, setting the stage for the final two frames.

Kendra Husmann singled, scored when Soelberg reached on an error, with Soelberg scoring when Aunspach reached on an error.

Lesch was 3-for-5 with two singles, a home run and five RBIs, with Aunspach hitting two singles, a double and scored twice while Soelberg scored three runs from the eighth spot in the lineup. Kendra Husmann aided the Hawk cause with two base hits and a stolen base.

Meredith Olson was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the hosts, with Kellie Prince hitting a double and a home run and driving in three runs. Hannah Woodworth helped the winning side with two doubles and two RBIs.

Olson allowed seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four to claim the win.

W-G hosts Earlham tonight and then the W-G Classic both Friday and Saturday. W-G plays Pleasantville at 10 a.m. and Council Bluffs Lewis Central at 2 p.m. Friday before facing Ogden at 10 a.m. and Perry at 4 p.m. Saturday.
