Students from Dallas Center-Grimes High School were joined by Iowa Secretary of State Paul D. Pate, second from left, when they voted in the November 2016 Youth Straw Poll. Donald Trump was the children’s choice for president.

Iowa’s June 2 primary election will go forward as planned, according to Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, but Pate is encouraging Iowans to vote by mail in order to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.

For the sake of safety and convenience, Pate announced Monday an extension of the early voting period for mailed ballots from 29 days to 40 days.

Every registered voter in Iowa will be mailed an absentee ballot request form, and Iowans will be able to cast their mailed-in ballots beginning April 23.
