Patrick Fields, 47, of Paton was killed Tuesday morning when the tractor he was driving was struck from the rear by a 1996 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer on 130th Street east of X Avenue in Greene County.

A Paton man died Tuesday morning when the tractor he was driving was struck from the rear by a semi-tractor trailer in the 2400 block of 130th Street (County Road E18) east of X Avenue near Paton in Greene County.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s office, a 1996 Freightliner semi-tractor, driven by Troy Shaw, 25, of Harcourt, was pulling an empty grain trailer and traveling eastbound on 130th Street when it struck a 1965 Farmall 656 tractor, driven by Patrick Fields, 47, of Paton, that was also eastbound on 130th Street.

The force of the collision pushed the tractor into the north ditch, where it rolled onto its top and pinned the driver.

Fields was pronounced dead at the scene. Shaw was not injured.

The Greene County Sheriff’s office, Iowa State Patrol, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, Grand Junction Volunteer Fire Department, Paton Volunteer Fire Department and Greene County EMS responded to the scene.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.
