The Perry Area Winter Swim (PAWS) team hosted a Greater Iowa Swim League meet at the McCreary Community Building pool Saturday, with nearly 100 youngsters from ages 8-18 competing. Newton, Pella and Denison all brought teams to the meet.
Saturday’s meet was the first use by Perry of their new timing system, which was installed on the bulkhead and will be utilized for 25-yard events swam by the 8U swimmers. In the past those times were created by the averaging to two stop watches per lane; now the automatic recorded times will be directly fed to the finish system.
The new system was funded in part by the Perry Summer Swim Team, the McCreary Community Building and by a grant courtesy of the Bock Family Foundation.
Perry competes in the Greater Iowa Swim League, which does not keep team scores at their meets. Swimmers compete against their own seed times and seek to qualify for the state meet, which will be held March 5 in Grinnell.
PAWS will swim at Denison Saturday, and while no meet is scheduled for Jan. 30, the Perry swimmers will play host to a meet Feb. 6.
The following have state qualifying times this season. PAWS State Qualifers also need to swim in three GISL meets in addition to having a qualifying time to participate at the state meet.

They join the following other regional qualifiers: Sophia for her 100IM, Chase Archer for his 50 free and Haley Vaughn’s 100 breast. The Regional Swim meet is April 2-3 in Minneapolis.
