If you have been watching TV at all lately, you might think that incontinence was an inevitable consequence of growing older.

“Not so,” said Kristin Holthaus, pelvic health specialist at 21st Century Rehab, in her presentation to the March meeting of the Dallas County Area Retired School Personnel Association.

Holthaus explained the job of the pelvic floor muscles, ligaments and nerves and shared the disorders associated with them, the most common one being urinary incontinence.

She encouraged those with pelvic floor dysfunction not to just ignore the symptoms but seek a screening with a certified pelvic floor physical therapist to address strength, endurance and overall control.

Holthaus shared one simple treatment with the group that involved diaphragmatic breathing. She also addressed tips for a healthy bladder.

Sue Leslie is the secretary of the Dallas County Area Retired School Personnel Association.
