LAST YEAR — The teams played a nearly-even game, with Perry prevailing, 21-14, at Dewey Field. The Bluejays had 205 yards of total offense (21 passing, 184 rushing) and the Toreadors 379 yards (142 passing, 237 rushing).
Boone quarterback Tanner Schminke returns after finishing 15-27-2 for 142 yards while rushing for two touchdowns and 64 yards on 18 carries in the 2014 meeting.
Adan Medina had two interceptions to help secure the win for Perry.
ABOUT THE TOREADORS — Boone is winless despite passing for 245 more yards than any other team in Class 3A. Host Ballad topped Boone, 29-23, in week one, with Boone falling at Gilbert, 40-37, and at Humboldt, 54-27, in the past two weeks. Gilbert blanked Perry, 44-0, last week.
Schminke had put up 99 passes so far, connecting on 45. He has thrown for 894 yards (second best among all classes) for 10 touchdowns while being intercepted seven times. The junior has rushed 29 times for 96 yards and one TD.
Danny Anderson is second in both yards (454) and TD receptions (7) while catching 15 aerials. Sophomore tight end Jon Herrick (6-6, 200) has 275 yards and 3 TDs on 12 catches, with Raithe Clemons (6-67) and Lane Losh (5-55) also key weapons. Clemons has also returned a kick 90 yards for a score.
Kaden Sherrard (23-111, 1 TD) is the leading rusher for Boone.
Colbey Wadsworth (25), Schminke (24), Brigham Campbell (15.5, 4 for negative yards) and Kade Moran (13) are the leading tacklers. The team has picked off two passes and recovered four fumbles.
ABOUT THE BLUEJAYS — The Perry offense has been ineffective at best. ADM stopped host Perry, 14-13 in week one, with North Polk (24-0) and Gilbert (44-0) keeping Perry scoreless in weeks two and three, respectively.
Ryan Rathje has rarely had time to look for receivers but is 35-61-4 for 269 yards and TD, with Taviar Lucas (16-127, 1 TD), Marcus Meri (5-57) and Jacob Thompson (5-30) his chief targets through three games.
Eli Saemisch has rushed for 70 yards on 27 carries and Gage Welch for 67 yards on 11 carries during late-game duties. As yards lost on sacks are deducted from rushing totals, the team has totaled only 98 yards on the ground — by 101 the lowest total in 3A.
The defense is led by the 22 tackles (five for negative yardage) from Solomon Pierce and the 19.5 stops (three for loss) from Mark Campos while Kade VanKirk and Medina have both made 15 tackles. The team has intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles, with Campos recording one of each kind of turnover.
