About two dozen Perry-Area Democrats and Democratic candidates for elected office gathered Wednesday afternoon to mark the opening of the party’s 2018 campaign headquarters at 1220 Willis Ave.

The Perry office will be staffed Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to provide voters with information and yard signs and to assist citizens voter registration, absentee ballots and other election-related issues.

Perry-Area Democrats spokesperson Monica Peitz said the office will also be open by appointment. For more information or to make an appointment, call 515-465-9882

The local Dems were still buzzing from Saturday’s visit by Jack Hatch, who stood in for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell at the Perry Golf and Country Club.

Hatch recapped a series of issues important to his Democratic audience, including Republicans’ faulty privatization of Iowa’s Medicaid system and the steps Hubbell plans to take in reversing it on his first day of office. Hatch said Hubbell will be authorized to initiate this reversal process under current Medicaid regulations.

The former Iowa senator and the 2014 Democratic gubernatorial candidate also took questions from the audience of about 25, addressing issues ranging from education funding to CAFOs and water quality issues, including the 3/8-cent sales tax measure approved by Iowa voters in 2010.

Hatch said the Hubbell campaign plans to reschedule its Perry meet-and-greet event.
