The Iowa Food Bank sponsored its fourth annual Smoke Out Hunger barbeque fundraiser Sunday, presented by Nationwide from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brenton Skating Plaza in Downtown Des Moines.
Lois Hoger, volunteer coordinator at the Perry-Area Food Pantry, and Lou Hoger, Perry-Area Food Pantry site manager, participated in the annual fundraiser. The Perry-Area Food Pantry is a regular recipient of food from the Food Bank of Iowa, purchasing available commodities from the Des Moines bank every other week.
Lou Hoger also took the opportunity to advise Book of the need for access to Latino and Hispanic food commodities from the Food Bank of Iowa.
Attendees enjoyed all the BBQ they could eat from a smoke-tastic lineup of local pitmasters and restaurants, including some unique vegetarian BBQ options. Craft beers complemented the BBQ samplings — all part of the ticket price. Live music, kid’s activities and picnic table board games rounded out the food-bank fun.
The vendor list included Uncle Wendell’s BBQ, Captns BBQ and Other Things, Bubba
Teddy Maroon’s, Rootz Afro Caribbean Cuisine, Fresh Cafe and Market, Zombie Burger + Drink Lab, Gateway Market and Cafe, Crème Cupcake, Jethro’s BBQ and Splash Seafood Bar and Grill, Brookies, Lola’s Fine Hot Sauce, Rolling Smoke BBQue and Bacon Box.
