Local tees and lawns received their first dusting of snow Sunday, a small taste of winter pleasures to come.

The rigors of winter travel were briefly previewed Sunday with a light snowfall in the Perry area.

First rain, then sleet and then snow fell on the Perry area Sunday, with trees and lawns receiving a light dusting of the winter whiteness.

Readers are reminded that the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has issued a freeze warning that will remain in effect from a 1.m. to 10 a.m. Monday morning.

Temperatures are forecast to drop into the upper 20s to near 30 degrees.

A freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible. The NWS said these conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. The below-freezing temperatures will result in a killing freeze and end the growing season for central Iowa.
