That top-ranked Davenport Assumption was good was no surprise. That Perry would struggle with Des Moines North was.
The Polar Bears, who entered their game with the Bluejays on an 84-game losing skid, gave the hosts all they could handle before falling, 8-3. Sergeant Bluff-Luton topped North in the consolation game after Assumption had downed SB-L, 12-2, in their semifinal tilt. The two schools are 355 miles apart, making their meeting almost certainly the top distance-separation regular season game in Iowa this season.
Assumption’s win set up a title game between the Knights and the Bluejays, with the guests claiming a 14-victory.
Perry was plagued by errors throughout Saturday’s action. The Jays booted or threw the ball away five times against North and seven times against Assumption, both of whom played error-free against Perry, the result of which was 11-of-17 runs allowed by the hosts being unearned.
The Jays scored in the top of the third against North when Will Whiton walked, stole second and scored on a Zach Roberts base hit.
Roberts was impressive on the mound, allowing only an unearned run on just four hits and two walks while striking out seven in six innings.
An error had allowed North to tie the game at 1-all in the sixth and set up extra innings.
North starter Joseph Frazier had held Perry to just one run on only three hits and four walks with one strikeout through seven innings but ran out of gas in the seventh.
Whiton walked, Nic Wilhelmi singled and Roberts walked, with a two-run double from Lansing driving in two runs after Whiton had scored on a wild pitch.
Michael Sunga relieved, but Perry kept the pressure on, as Adan Medina hit a RBI-double, with a Kade VanKirk single and three wild pitches helped the Jays break out to an 8-1 lead.
VanKirk replaced Roberts for the eighth. He allowed one hit and struck out one, but a pair of miscues allowed two unearned runs to score.
Daniel McEloque led the Polar Bears at the plate with three hits.
Assumption (18-3) had no intentions of having a close game. The Knights used two hits, two walks and four Perry errors to score seven times in the top of the third, then added a double and two hits to two more Perry errors for four runs in the fourth.
Perry (12-7) answered with four runs in their half of the fourth to trim their deficit to 11-4.
VanKirk walked and Janier Puente singled, with a walk to Alex Long loaded the bases. Whiton cleaned the bags with a three-run double, stole third base, and raced home moments later when Roberts hit a RBI-ground out.
A walk, single, double and two RBI-ground outs plated three Knights in the top of the seventh for a 14-4 lead.
Lansing singled in Perry’s final at-bat, with a walk to Alexis Garrido and a Caleb Olejniczak base hit loaded the bases. Andrew Pentico’s ground out drove in pinch-runner Gill Garcia, with Garrido scoring on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.
Austin Wedig was 3-for-5 with a double for Assumption, with Connor Lindaman swatting two doubles, Nine different Knights had RBIs in the win.
Jake Poster went three frames for the win, with Jack Tucker and Daniel Powers also seeing time on the hill.
Puente suffered the loss in three innings. He allowed seven runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks, with Medina throwing one inning of ball in which he yielded four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks. Lansing cleaned up with three innings of work during which he surrendered three runs on five hits and three walks.
Perry hosts Winterset Monday as they return to Raccoon River Conference action against the team with whom they shared the league title last season.
