The Perry, Bouton and Woodward  Volunteer Fire Departments staged a structure-fire training exercise Saturday morning, burning a vacant house at 18046 180th St. in rural Perry.

The daylong training included practicing search-and-rescue techniques in the smoke-filled house and also simulating a flashover, which occurs when the superheated gases in a structure ignite and fill the structure with flame.

The training burns also help the fire crews get accustomed to new equipment and technical practices.

After the learning sessions, the firefighters made a controlled burn of the 1,300-square-foot, 100-year-old house, owned by John Splendore.

Lunch was provided by spouses of the firefighters.
