STATE CENTER — The wind and a tough field served as solid tests for the Perry boys golf team as they navigated the 18-holes at Lincoln Valley Golf Course in their annual visit to the West Marshall Invitational.

Nevada won the 14-team competition with a 316, with Grinnell (by tiebreaker) taking second over Oskaloosa after each had rounds of 333. Norwalk (334) was fourth, with East Marshall (342), Perry (348) and Boone (349) completing the top half of the team results. PCM (357) finished eighth, with South Hamilton (359), Carlisle (379), West Marshall (382), Colfax-Mingo (386), Bondurant-Farrar (391) and South Tama (395) also making the circuit.

Cole Gidel of Nevada shot a four-over par 76 to win medalist honors, Connor McKay of Grinnell won a tiebreaker to win runner-up medalist honors over Nevada’s Can Shill after each posted scores of 78. Perry’s Noah Wilkening, Oskaloosa’s Spencer Tucker and Grinnell’s Lucas Scherf all fired rounds of 80.

Wilkening fought through the blustery conditions to record seven pars and a pair of birdies in posting his team-leading 80.

Jack Brosnahan had six pars en route to an 86, with Will Whiton making four pars and a birdie while shooting a 90 while Connor Nielson used three pars to provide a card of 92.

Rounds of 94 from Kade VanKirk and of 96 from Ryan Rathje were not used toward the Perry team total.
