PELLA — Perry scored a hard-fought 1-0 win over Pella in non-conference action Thursday.
Chance Webster scored the only goal in the game in the 23rd minute when the Pella goalie misplayed a ball, allowing Webster to convert off the rebound for his second goal of the season.
“Our possession in the first half of the game was phenomenal — we utilized space, moved the ball with a great deal of pace and had a great deal of success keeping Pella (9-9) off of the ball,” Perry head coach Gary Overla said. “The second half was about the same, we just didn’t capitalize on opportunities.
“Pella was able to get some chances at goal but Anthony Aragon had a couple of really nice saves that prevented them from equalizing,” he added. “Defensively, we played well. We played well offensively, especially in the midfield.”
The shutout was the eighth of the season for Aragon as Perry improved to 13-3 overall.
The Perry junior varsity was a 3-0 victor. Anthony Velasco scored what Overla termed a “delicious goal” with Bryan Catalan scoring and Ronal Menendez converting a penalty kick.
“The JV moved the ball very well and connected passes extremely well,” Overla said. “Out possession in this game was superb, all-in-all a very good game. The JV has played much like a varsity this year and in order for us to have continued success in the future, that has to remain the focus. We want our JV to be ready to step onto the varsity field and play and that happened this year.”
The Bluejay freshmen saw their season end with a 2-0 loss.
“They didn’t win any games but they did improve over the course of the season and that is really what that program is all about,” Overla said. “Hopefully we can get some of those kids to buy into our off-season workouts and they will get better for next year.”
