HUXLEY — The second portion of the prep basketball season for the Perry teams began with a pair of lopsided losses Friday as host Ballard swept a Raccoon River Conference set in convincing fashion.

The Bomber girls (9-2, 4-1) streaked to a 40-5 halftime lead en route to a 66-13 win over the Jayettes (1-11, 0-5) with the Ballard boys (7-2, 4-1) steadily pulling away from Perry (0-10, 0-5) to claim a 64-19 victory in the nightcap.

The Jayettes were without the services of point guard and team leader Molly Lutmer, who is nursing a foot injury. Her presence was clearly missed, as the team was harassed and pressured into nearly two dozen turnovers before the intermission.

Perry made only one traditional basket in the game — a short, banked-in shot from Michelle Tobar in the final seconds. The remaining points came on 3-point shots from Gabby West, Peyton Tunink and Kennedy Tunink, with Jayna Kenney sinking two free throws.

Meg Reitz led Ballard with 14 points, with Molly Ihle scoring 12 points and Maggie Larson and Josie Fleischman 11 apiece. Cassidy Thompson and Brooke Loewe both had six points, with three others scoring two points apiece.

The Perry boys were also missing a key player, as Mohamed Abdelnabi was serving a suspension for missed practice time.

However, the Bluejays did welcome Brendan Ivory, playing for the first time this season.

The addition and subtraction made little difference, as the hosts opened a 12-2 lead after eight minutes of play and then used a 15-3 spurt through the middle of the second frame to enter the half holding a 33-12 advantage.

A 19-4 scoring edge in the third period widened the gulf to 52-16, with Perry outscored 10-3 over the final eight minutes of play.

Keghan West had eight points and Ivory five to lead Perry, with Alex Morales adding three points, Avery Meister two and Kato Dougan one.

Mason Murphy and Connor Drew had 14 apiece for the Bombers, with Reece Huen contributing 12 points. Kegan Odden scored eight points and Max Olsan six, with five players adding two points apiece.

Ballard was 15-of-21 at the foul line, while Perry connected on just 2-of-9. The Bluejays are just 36-of-104 (35 percent) at the free throw stripe.

Perry visits Boone for an RRC set Tuesday, with Bondurant-Farrar visiting Perry Friday to complete the first rotation of conference games.
