Perry community Christmas dinner to serve drive-through

Volunteers are still needed for the annual Perry community free Christmas dinner, which will be a drive-through event this year.

The 14th annual free Christmas dinner will look a little different this year, organizers say, but it will still serve joy and comfort food to the Perry community.

“COVID has changed our event for this year,” said longtime organizer Deb Miller of Perry. “Free Christmas dinner this year will be drive through or deliveries only.”

Miller said about 10 volunteers are need on Dec. 24. Volunteers will wear face masks and social distance at 10 feet. Members of the same household may work in pairs.

Some 25 to 30 volunteers are needed for Dec. 25, with some working inside and others delivering the drive-through meals. The same virus-mitigation rules will apply.

“We help make so many people‚Äôs day a little happier, bringing them a delicious dinner and fellowship for what is sometimes a very sad day for some,” Miller said. “This is challenging for sure this year but can be done. My family will wear masks and shields when working.”

Miller said the need for food is great in the Perry community. “We are looking for a huge group, 500 or more,” she said. “We need help.”
