Perry cross country has strong outing at Madrid

MADRID — Two Jayettes finished in the top 10, with one Bluejay doing so as the Perry cross country teams turned in a strong effort at the Madrid Invitational Thursday.

Senior Jaylene Karolus won the girls race in 22 minutes, 4 seconds, with freshman teammate Julie Maylum ninth in 24:24 to help the Perry girls place second with 60 points.

Madrid (53 points) won the girls side, with Ogden (66) third, Woodward-Granger (88) fourth, BGM (106) fifth and Colo-NESCO (109) sixth.

Fithawi Andemichael led the Bluejays by crossing eighth in 19:11.

That helped Perry place third in the boys team standings with 88 points, trailing only Ogden (31) and Madrid (38). Woodward-Granger was fourth at 101, with BGM (109), Colo-NESCO (111) and Woodward Academy (214) completing the field.

Taryn Nehring was 12th for the Perry girls in 24:44, with Amy Diaz 17th in 25:14 and Mylah Meis 21st in 25:50 to complete the five scoring. Mercedes Ponce finished 26th in 26:53 for Perry but did not have her placing calculated.

Gannon Meis (20:02), Owen Myers (20:15), Yonas Andemichael (20:37), and Jonathan Chavez (21:21) finished 13-15-20-25 to account for the Perry team points. Also in action for the varsity were Isaac Ballard (29th, 22:03) and Oscar Beltrand (31st, 22:07).

Seven junior varsity runners completed the course for Perry, as Cole Nelson (22:40), Alexis Rodriguez-Modina (22:58), Renzo Saenz (22:59), Bryce Anliker (24:17), Carlos Ruiz Aragon (25:31), Jackson Loyd (27:23), and Jose Chavez (27:26) were in action.
