Perry cross country opens season at Gilbert Invite

AMES — A trip to the Iowa State University course for the Gilbert Invitational served as the kick off for the cross country season for Perry and nearly a dozen other teams who competed in the large-school portion of the meet.

DC-G (26 points), Gilbert (46) and Bondurant-Farrar (104) were the top three boys teams, with Perry 10th of 13 with 301 points. The Gilbert girls won their side with 32 points, with DC-G (44) and North Polk (65) completing the top three. Perry, with 235 points, was 10th in the 11-team girls field.

Alex Thompson and Tyler Borneman of DC-G were the top two finishers in the boys race on times of 17 minutes, 32.3 seconds and 17:33.61, respectively, with Gilbert’s Nathan Patel third in 17:38.93.

The first five finished for the Bluejays placed 36th, 61st, 63rd, 67th and 74 in a field of 223.

Zach Thompson (20:07.26) was the first Jay to cross, with Zach Stewart (21:13.74) and Mario Cruz (21:38.48) second and third for Perry while Luis Guzman (22:05.2) and Dane McCarty (23:05.04) also scoring. Aaron Lockwood and Hayden McFarland ran for the varsity as well, but did not have their placings used for the team score.

Others running for the Jays were Gabe Ridnour, Beau Nelson, Gerardo Gonzalez, Ben Stika, Jacob Prombo and Miguel Gonzalez.

Jayette head coach Shaylena Bell said there were several positives to take from the meet.

“I am very proud of all the girls for completing the race,” Bell said. “We have a long way to go, but we had a lot of mental and physical successes.”

Grace Stewart (23rd, 23:51.29) led the Perry girls, with freshman Molly Lutmer (45th, 25:53.75) the second Jayette to finish. Hannah Peterson (50th, 27:07.46), Julissa Calderon (56th, 28:39.73) and Alejandra Rivera (61st, 29:21.33) also placed, with McKinley Thompson and Darian McCord running for the varsity as well.

Also running for Perry were Sophie Prombo, Angela Hernandez, Kyla Devilbiss, Alondra Avila, Kat Munoz and Andrea Cortes.

Katie Murano (DC-G) finished in 21:10.15 to win the girls race, with Carly Rahn (GLB) second in 21:11.51 while Amelia Leaher (NP) was third in 21:12.13. A total of 162 harriers ran in the girls varsity meet.
